Diabetes is a life-long health condition that is characterized by a high sugar level in the blood. Contrary to popular perception, diabetes is not a killer disease; it is a long-lasting metabolic disorder. But if neglected or improperly treated, it is the complications arising from diabetes that could be fatal. Across the world, 415 million people are living with diabetes, a figure which is expected to touch the 642 million mark by the year 2040. 

Singapore – Standing 2nd in number of diabetics 


A fast-paced, sedentary lifestyle and growing affluence are the key reasons for the increasing number of diabetics in Singapore. According to a report published by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Singapore has the second-highest proportion of diabetics among developed nations. One out of 9 people aged 18 to 69 has diabetes. That’s about 11.3% of the population or more than 400,000 people!

Also, Singapore has one of the world's fastest ageing populations and 32.4% of Singaporeans 60-69 years of age are diagnosed to be living with diabetes.

Need for healthy yet palatable recipes 


Diabetes cannot be cured; it can be managed. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, with focus on proper food and right exercise, is the key to keep complications at bay. 
As it turns out, food intake has a conclusive impact on maintaining the blood glucose level. Refined carbohydrates and sugary breakfast cereals are swiftly disappearing from the breakfast table. On the other hand, low glycemic load foods and high-fiber foods are emerging as the healthier alternative. By the way, the glycemic index or GI is a measure of the effects of carbohydrate on blood sugar level.
